Sounds like a bad joke, but it isn't. A H3N8 influenza strain has jumped species and killed at least 162 seals on the New England Coast. Seal pups under 6 months old were most affected by the pneumonia and skin lesions. Other marine animals, such as whales, may also get infected. The bird flu strains that have jumped to humans were H1N1 and H5N1. Nobody knows if the new seal flu is going to be able to infect humans, but it appears to be another bird flu that has traveled.

We can give the H1N1 flu to our feline friends! If you have a kitty, wash your hands before you say hello with petting! The first case was in Iowa but now it has happened in Oregon and elsewhere.

Companion animals have been known to contract flu from other species — canine influenza (H3N8) originated in horses, and cats contract avian influenza (H5N1) from eating birds. But this appears to be the first time a cat has contracted influenza from a human. Two pet ferrets, one in Oregon and one in Nebraska, have also tested positive for H1N1, and the virus has also been transmitted between humans and pigs.

Seems likely at this point that the majority of fall illness is just people over-reacting to common colds. Funny how fear-mongering can plant the seeds of social collapse. CBS broke the story earlier this week. The CBC has admitted that the numbers are far lower than what is being reported in the media.
