Body Language: the face of Shame

The farther the lips are rolled in, the more intense the emotion. General McChrystal is deeply ashamed in this photo.

Disagree. There isn't a commissioned military officer in any of the seven United States' uniformed services who is not aware of "Article 88: Contempt Toward Officials."

There is NO WAY that a 4-Star general would be unaware of the fact that he could be relieved of command if he spoke disparagingly of the President of the United States.

I believe this was just an easy way to get out of the quagmire without having to resign.

perhaps you don't know what shame is?
I said absolutely nothing about him not being aware that he'd done wrong. His facial expression rather reveals that he totally comprehends how badly he screwed up, and how is reputation is shot.

The thing I find unforgivable is that by undermining his chain of command he damaged the moral of his own people. Regardless of what an officer might think he is not at liberty to share that with his 'other ranks'. There's a scene on Crimson Tide where Denzel Washington (No 1) questions Gene Hackman (Captain) and is quietly asked to come to the Captain's cabin where he gets torn a new arsehole. That is how it's done and the 2IC of a bomber would never get to that rank without knowing not to question the boss in public.

So General McCrystal has been a very bad man, at best stupid and at worst making a political play for the benefit of his old bosses party.

If he's not ashamed he damned well should be.

He's ashamed. That's the point. He knows.
