Herbs: Urinary System



URINARY HERBS

UVA URSI
arctostaphylos uva ursi
bear berry, kinnic kinnic from algonquin tribe smoking mixture
arcto = bear in latin
staph = cluster
part used: leaves
flower is pink bell
habit: ground cover, sometimes used in landscaping
CONSTITUENTS: phenolic glycosides, classic example
pure phenols are toxic, renal harm
in plants small quantities are not so toxic to kidneys, liver
often used short term because of toxic potential, not used in high concentration
tincture, tea
for simple UTI or pyelonephritis
phenols reach urine, surface contact with urinary mucosa
phenolics occ emmenogogue, abortifacient: CI for use: preg
teas are best UTI tx because they provide more surface contact with urinary mucosa
uses tincture for severe infx, hx of infx to kidney, give both tea & tincture
phenolic glycosides: arbutin, methylarbutin, hydroquinone, all become hydroquinone in body
common flavinol glycosides: rutin, querticitin, (also in ginkgo, onion, curcurmin)
phenolic glycoside content highest in spring when leaves are juiciest
this plant always leathery but wetter in spring, more tannins in fall leaves
tannins for drying action
family: ericaceae, also in family: cranberry, blueberry, contain sugar mannose
mannose great for UTIs, not sure if its in uva ursi
purified mannose powder for pts with repeat UTIs, costs more than herb but works
feel in bladder w/in 15 mins, less burning

CHIMAPHILA UMBELLATUM
can kind of ditto everything we just said about uva ursa for this plant
diminutive plant
arbutin = phenolic glycoside that turns into hydroquinone in body
not used in landscaping, not as sustainable
common name: pipsissewa, used as flavoring in pepsi
likes shade, dappled

EQUISETUM ARVENSE, HYMENALE
many sp used
part used: fruiting body, dries faster, easier to process
family: equisetaceae
predecessor to flowering plants, some were very tall, now max 4-5 feet high
grow in water, marshy areas
is drying, clears dampness in Chinese med
aka: scouring rush, gritty to touch, high mineral content
grows in great abundance, can be invasive
plant life cycle has spore producing form, fungating form
"true grit" thrives in drainage ditches, push through asphalt, tear up plumbing
absorbs heavy metals, choose source for medicine carefully
used for bioremediation
USES
long hx of use
abundance-->used as soak for chronic pain, debility, osteoarthritis
poultice, plaster
for CT tonic: fragile nails, slow growing hair
doctrine of signatures: needle like delicate form-->for eyelashes, fingernails, hair
anti-inflamatory
we spend Ca to secrete oxalates, need good mineral sources to help excretion
minerals-->nourishing diuretic
also used for mineral def: osteoporosis, bone fx, poor wound healing, tendon/cartilage injury
for keloid tendency, infx tendency
CAPSULES FOR MINERAL ABSORPTION
her osteoporosis formula: equisetum, gotu kola, nettles ("mineral capsules")
tinctures, tea don't carry minerals well
spigeric tincture has the marked burned to ash mixed back in, rarely done
vinegar extract = acidtracta, acid helps get minerals out of plant

equiset...something is anti-inflam, use as adjuvant for UTI need antimicrobial too

not as widely used as equisetum

berries ripen throughout year, covered in "bloom" powdery coating, must touch to see if ripe

be cautious dt high volatile oil content: hot, stimulating, don't give to acutes UTI
don't give to acute burning pathology, use soothing/cooling herb
can store dry as berry
not used in commercial products: too much liability, niche usage
USES
excellent disinfectant
for elder or pt w/ indwelling catheter, DM, prone to UTI or pyelonephritis
minor ingredient in formula: 4 mLs in 2oz bottle
flavoring gin
for EOs, pure juniper oil aka cade oil (thick, tarry, resinous, contains volatile oils)
cade used like pine tar on stubborn skin dz ie psoriasis
Nagel's juniper beer-->acute hemorrhagic urinary bleeding

PIPER METHYSTICUM
kava
anodyne for urinary passages
taste tingly, numb
antimicrobial, not as powerful as uva ursi
ok in tea, not delicious
part used: root
most powerful for person passing kidney stone: antispasmodic
for bladder spasm in atopic individual, food allergen causing cramping, tenesmus
for prostatitis with squeezing/cramping, can't empty bladder
best thing she knows of to relax urinary spasm, urinary retention, kidney stone passage
druglike when taken in high doses, wet noodle aspect

THUJA
relative of juniper, ditto all said about juniper
excellent antimicrobial but hot, reserve for person with cold/atonic constitution
used as counter irritant to get blood moving, get sympathetic nerve response
homeopathic for venereal warts, STDs, gonorrhea, urethral discharges
botanical in small amounts in tincture, 2mL in 2oz bottle

BERBERIS sp
homeopathic UTI remedies: burning, frequency, urgency-->this one tops
antimicrobial
tastes better than goldenseal
ok in tea or tincture
alterative
for repetitive vaginal or UTI, tx for several months
add something else for acute

ALTHEA SP
purple flower, hollyhock in this family, can use whole hollyhock flower same way
root is most demulcent
mucus memb tonic
sooth bladder pain, for UTI, UC
mucilaginous
does not combine well with things that are resiny: ie kava, juniper
resin makes mucilage gum up, stops up dropper
acute renal pain, passing a stone, RBCs in urine, give separate tincture or tea of althea
minimal mucilage throw in some with other herbs, feel better quickly
best usage: most pain relieving tea soak it in cold water several hours, overnight
in morning bring to simmer, turn off and cover, let sit 30 mins, gets very slimy
use muslin bag, buy from mtn rose herbals, put herb in bag, do above, squeeze out w/ hand
CONSTITUENT

sim to a GAG, helps mucus memb repair
some people metabolize it to odorous molecule
some people have gene to smell it

a refrigerant diuretic: cools burning pains
