A Conservative Argument FOR Gay Marriage

I wouldn't have believed it, but some Republicans seem to be realizing that the party will not get out of the doghouse until it stops being so homophobic. Steve Schmidge, who was an advisor to John McCain during his campaign, said:

It cannot be argued that marriage between people of the same sex is un American or threatens the rights of others. On the contrary, it seems to me that denying two consenting adults of the same sex the right to form a lawful union that is protected and respected by the state denies them two of the most basic natural rights affirmed in the preamble of our Declaration of Independence — liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That, I believe, gives the argument of same sex marriage proponents its moral force.

Man has a penis, woman has a vagina. That is the way we were made, whether by GOD or evolution or whatever. Man with Man, or Woman with Woman is just not natural in my opinion and no amount of talk about how much you care for each other is going to change that for me. All I can do is try to counter all the media BS that is EVERYWHERE these days and teach my kids that being a homosexual or lesbian is NOT just a choice you can make, like deciding what type of dressing you want on your salad. Do what you want but stop trying to convice me that it is normal, moral or whatever else you want to call it. I liked it better when gays would do what they want without trying to push thier lifestyle on me or asking the government to make laws to make things easier for them. It's your choice, live with it.

Go ahead a post your rants now, yes my mind is closed on this subject and I like it that way!

This comment from a man named Dan. And for the me last line says it all. Because what I would say to Dan, if Dan would listen, is that it does not matter in the least if something is "natural" in your view, relative to its being a reasonable law. Laws are about making a civil society with a minimum of strife, but some firm boundaries. When a giant proportion of your population has the idea that they are perfectly free to do something, and you disagee, you're in a bad spot.

Unfortunately Dan and many others show a striking ignorance about human sexuality. But there are a lot of Dans out there. I think part of the problem is the visceral reaction that heterosexual men have to the very idea of homosexual sex. It gets them right where it counts. If the women controlled the governments and laws of this planet, I bet same sex relationships would already by legally sanctioned.

At this point in time, I cannot even consider voting for a Republican - and that's sad, because the Republican party did have a history of progressivism -- but to me seems taken over by the Religious Right. And homophobia (quaintly clothed as "save our marriages"/"save our children") is one glaring sign of it.

Aye, aye, aye. It's the Dans who scare me. The refusal to even discuss opposing opinions and points of view is detrimental to our future.

I feel sorry for his children. Especially if one of them is gay.
