Joseph Kony 2012: Get Him

I read this that is the fastest spreading viral video of all time. Of course there is controversy around it. As far as I know Joseph Kony really does kidnap kids and make them into murderers and sex slaves. So why not make sure he goes down this year? I like it. World community comes to bear on bad apple because of youtube. What next?

However hardly anybody is giving money to the cause. We all feel rich enough to share the link, but we, myself included, don't feel rich or involved enough to give money to a far-away cause. How can we induce world-tribe behavior? Can it be done? Or is it antithetical to true human nature? We are tribal, but it appears to me that our tribe is not extended by way of computer or television screens. I think that we need to touch and smell each other to feel that the other is part of our tribe.

I can't help but to wonder what happened to this man to make him so vicious. He is human too. How did his compassion get stripped away?

Ooooh! Awesome new word: SLACKTIVISM. That the org has wasted a bunch of money is no big surprise. That people are attacking it on all sides is also predictable. What is your personal feeling about it?

I'm suspicious, overall. I haven't watched the video and have only skimmed the articles saying that the organization is something of a scam.

Well it looks to me as if they stand to make a considerable profit if people actually pay for the action kits. However, insofar as most of us aren't sending dollars, it is simply a public education campaign with the intent to manipulate the US government. Seems to me that for very little expenditure the US military could take care of him, which I suspect is what Obama has in mind. Even though I don't think the US needs to police the world, it seems reasonable to smack a fly sometimes. I do wonder if eliminating him will eliminate the culture he has created, or if someone else will step into the same role in the vacuum created by his removal. It may not be as simple as removing one man.... and US involvement could create a backlash much as our involvement in the Middle East has done. Hard to know anything for sure... but I do trust Obama. He wouldn't get involved unless he had good intelligence on the question and a reasonable expectation of longterm success.

It's easy to lose compassion when you decide the you are at war and that your enemy will stop at nothing. It's easy to justify anything that will give you any advantage no matter how small and to minimize any negative effects. Easy to say "Yeah, I made children soldiers and sex slaves, but I gave them a better life than my foe would have. I am at war. I need to do whatever I need to do to keep my troops in line."

It happens so often in ways a million times more subtle than this.

Yes, I do understand. We psychologically dehumanize the enemy so that their life does not matter. As long as we are attuned to their humanity, it is against our nature to harm them.
