NAC GOOD FOR **
**URI's
particularly useful for treating upper respiratory and lung infections; mucolytic
classic study published in 1997: may not even notice being sick
NAC significantly reduced flu-like episodes
**OCD
case report of a single patient with OCD who benefited from taking NAC was published in 2006
for compulsive gambling, paper published in 2007, University of Minnesota
for trichotillomania, 2009 double blinded placebo controlled trial, n=50
**COCAINE ADDICTION
2007 paper reported on a trial using NAC to treat cocaine addicts
patient responses “… appeared to favor higher doses of NAC (2400 mg/day and 3600 mg/day). The majority of subjects who completed the study (n=16) either terminated use of cocaine completely or significantly reduced their use of cocaine during treatment. Overall the findings suggest that it is feasible to treat cocaine-dependent treatment seekers with N-acetylcysteine…”

BAD FOR CANCER
INTERFERES WITH CHEMO AND NATURAL CANCER THERAPIES
in late 1980's it was known that NAC decreased the toxicity of some chemo, so it was given
this is before we knew that it slows/stops cancer cell apoptosis: raising glutathione stops cancer cell death
NAC quickly taken up and converted to glutathione, primary antioxidant in our cells
NAC is used in studies to counteract anti-ca agents, and determine if action is via oxidation
NAC reverses apoptosis induced by chemo drugs MG132 and others that work mainly by ROS
also blocks antiprolif effects of curcumin, cantharidin, ginseng
also stops anticancer effects of berberine, selenium, melatonin, vit D3, green tea
(in ca cells melatonin stims ros production even tho it is known as an antioxidant)

WHEY AND OTHER CYSTEINE SOURCES MAY ALSO BE WORTH AVOIDING
cancer pts should also avoid large amounts of whey protein
great source of l-glutamine and can aid patients in rebuilding lost muscle mass
also a great source of l-cysteine and increases glutathione production
I presume that milk thistle would also be a good one to avoid when undergoing chemo

SOURCES
N-acetyl-cysteine dangerous with cancer according to Jacob Schor ND, FABNO, February 20, 2011
