Sounds like cranberries may downregulate the body's natural processing of warfarin. Warfarin is also known as Coumadin, it is the blood thinner that is also used to poison rats. If you eat lots of cranberry sauce with your turkey and warfarin, you might bleed out. So be careful out there. Grapefruit is another food that can drastically affect your drug metabolism, so no grapefruit diets without first consulting your doctor, OK?

I heard it in nutrition class. Then again on the Buddhist group. Apparently the Buddha ate meat too. I looked up the Dalai Lama's meat habit and discovered that it's old news. He has been eating meat on and off for a very long time. Tibetan Buddhists apparently would rather not talk about it. It seems there is some embarrassment that their holy leader doesn't follow the entire doctrine. To some of them it is wrong to eat meat, that it is contradictory with the teaching of compassion for all living beings.

“Although the bromide ion is widely distributed in nature, the main route of exposure in humans stems from bromide residues in food commodities as a result of the abundant use of bromide-containing pesticides, like methylbromide and ethylene dibromide, for soil fumigation in intensive horticulture and for postharvest treatment.” --van Leeuwen

It turns out that eating a diet rich in polyphenols and polyunsaturated fats actually encourages your brain to grow new cells!
POLYPHENOL SOURCES
most legumes
apples, grapes, pears, plums, cantaloupe
blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries
cherries, cranberries
broccoli, cabbage, celery, onion and parsley
also found in:
red wine, chocolate, green tea, coffee, olive oil, bee pollen (honey) and many grains
POLYUNSATURATED FATS
means omega 3 and 6
grain products, soybeans
herring, salmon, mackerel, halibut, fish oil (omega 3)
mayo, margarine, depending (read the label)
sunflower, safflower, etc oils (omega 6)
Ooooh, another interesting study: oxidative stress causes an upregulation of NMDA receptors on the cerebrovascular endothelium, and "heightens susceptibility to glutamate induced BBB disruption."

This is a true story of a military man who grew breasts and went to four doctors before someone figured out that his soymilk habit was the problem. A case report on his condition was published in the May/June 2008 issue Endocrine Practice. The article also addresses the popular conception that soy is "healthy", and the fact that soy products are used in infant formulas--to the detriment of the developing children.
